What is an organic food producer?

Organic food producers grow organic products without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. These foods include fruits and vegetables, grains, as well as dairy products.

When crops are naturally nurtured, organic food production can be achieved. This includes crop rotation, soil preparation, and pest control.

For an agricultural product to be considered organic, it must meet strict criteria set out by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).

These guidelines will ensure that consumers have safe, healthy, and nutritious food.

Organic food has many benefits, including lower pesticide residues and higher levels of heavy metal contamination as well as better nutrition and flavor.

USDA Organic Products must have the "USDA Certified organic" label.

This certification means that the product meets the standards laid down by the National Organic Program.

As well as ensuring that we eat healthier, organic food also helps protect our environment.

Organic farming techniques help preserve natural resources such as water and land. Organic farming also helps to reduce greenhouse gases emissions, which are responsible for climate change.

Organic agriculture uses fewer chemical inputs and pollutes less.

Because harmful gases such as ammonia or nitrates are less likely in the atmosphere, it also improves air quality.

There are many forms of organic farming.

Conventional farming uses synthetic inputs such pesticides and fertilizers.

Regenerative farming involves compost, cover crops, and green manures to improve soil health. It also encourages biodiversity.

Agroecology emphasizes sustainable relationships between people and plants.

Permaculture encourages self-sufficiency by creating systems that are similar to nature.


What are the benefits of organic products for skin?

Organic skincare products do not contain synthetic chemicals like parabens,phthalates, mineral oils, petroleum jelly or petrolatum.

Organic skincare products can be free of artificial colours and fragrances as well as preservatives, emulsifiers GMOs, Petrochemicals, animal testing (except for cosmetics tested on animals), pesticides hormones, antibiotics, heavy metallics and other contaminants.

They also have the ability to support healthy skin, prevent premature ageing, promote healing after injuries and overall well-being.

These are some standard terms you might come across when shopping for organic items:

  • Paraben Free: These are chemicals that keep certain cosmetic products stable. However, they can be toxic if used in large quantities.
  • Fragrance-Free: The product is free of essential oils or fragrances.
  • Cruelty-Free--No animals were hurt in the manufacturing process.
  • Natural Ingredients: The ingredient is naturally derived form the animal or plant.
  • Vegetarian/Vegetarian- The ingredients are either vegan/vegetarian.
  • Gluten-Free means that the formulation was free of gluten.
  • Non-Toxic -- The product doesn’t contain toxic substances, carcinogens, harmful compounds, or any other dangerous chemicals that could pose a threat to your health.
  • Biodegradable means that the product can be thrown away as it will become harmless components.
  • Pesticide Free - No pesticides were used during the growing or harvesting processes.
  • GMO-Free refers to the fact that no ingredients in the product contain genetically modified organisms.
  • Certified Organic refers to ingredients that were grown using methods that protect soil, water, air, wildlife and farmers.


How can you tell organic food from non-organic?

Ask any chef and he will tell you that fresh ingredients are the most important thing. We feel better when our food is good.

This is true for food as well. We can identify exactly where and how organic foods were grown when we purchase them. We also know it was not treated using harmful chemicals.

Organic foods are made without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, hormones, steroids, antibiotics, or genetically altered organisms (GMO). These substances aren't permitted for organic farmers.

But that doesn't mean there isn't an art to growing organic crops. There are many methods to safely grow them.

Many people refer to organic agriculture as sustainable agriculture. This is because organic farming uses less resources than conventional methods but provides enough nutrients for life to last.

Crop rotation, crop rotation, cover cropping and composting manure are all organic farming methods. These techniques prevent soil erosion while improving water quality.

They also reduce chemical pollution of waterways. Many of us live in urban areas so we have access to local farms that produce organic produce.

Two types of certification programs are available for organic products. The USDA National Organic Program certifies the one while the independent certifying agency certifies the other. Both require strict adherence of organic standards.

USDA seals and O Seals may be used to identify organic products that meet federal standards.


What is organic?

Organic meat means real food, grown without artificial fertilizers or pesticides. This also means that animals weren't given any genetically modified feed. The meat is safe to consume because it contains no harmful chemicals.

Organic meats are good for the environment. We reduce the amount of pollution in our rivers, lakes, and landfills by eating organic food. Organic farmers generally don't use toxic chemicals that kill birds and insects. We help to protect wildlife.

Locally purchasing organic meats is the best way to make sure you are eating healthy and organic meats. Local shopping helps keep more money in your community than it does out of state. Local businesses often offer discounts to their customers by shopping locally. Local businesses are more likely to keep jobs here than export them abroad.


What are my top priorities when buying organic products

USDA-certified organic labels are desirable. This guarantee that the product has met specific standards set forth by USDA. Look for the "USDA Organic" seal on packages, boxes, cartons, cans, and jars.

When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants which means that they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach areas: rumen (reticulum), omasum (omasum), and abomasum. Organic feeding must be done on all organs of the animal in order to get the cow labelled organic 100 percent.

When buying chicken, make sure it comes only from chickens fed 100% organic feed and never given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive tract composed of a crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.

It is important to ensure that dairy products are from cows that were fed 100% organic feed. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.

To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. A label for pork might say "95% organic", which means that 95% of the feed used by the pork came from organic sources.


Why should I go organic?

Many health issues have been linked to conventional agriculture, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. Healthy choices must be made when purchasing food.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), offers these tips to help you choose "cleaner" foods:

Always purchase organic fruits, vegetables and other products whenever possible.

USDA organic labels are required for meat, poultry, eggs and milk.

Avoid processed foods that claim to be "natural" and "no additives."

Carefully review ingredient lists. If an ingredient isn’t listed, it might be added during processing.

It is better to eat fresh meats than canned or frozen. Canned and frozen foods can often have lower nutritional content like high fructose syrup.

Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?

Organic foods are made without the use or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Organic farming practices include crop rotation, cover crops, composting animal manure, recycling wastewater, and integrated pest management (IPM).

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP), established in 2002 to regulate production, handling and processing of organic products sold in the United States. NOP regulations ensure organic agricultural products conform to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.

There are two types available in the U.S. for producers who want their products to be labeled "organic". One for farmers and ranchers, and one for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. There are several certifying organizations that offer these services. These include the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers as well as Quality Assurance International and the American Grassfed Association. These organizations offer third-party verification that farms adhere to strict guidelines about environmental stewardship and labour practices.

According to USDA’s Economic Research Service, organic farming accounted for $4.7Billion in 2013 sales. It was a 23 percent rise in retail spending for certified organic products since 2009. This period saw a 12 percent increase in grocery store sales. Spending on organic produce was up 29 percent, but only 1 percent on meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy.

Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. According to a 2015 survey conducted by Consumer Reports, 88 percent of respondents said they would pay more for organic food if it meant higher nutritional value. A Health Affairs study also found that organic food consumers are less likely to develop health problems such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, depression, and other diseases.

Although organic foods are not proven to prevent or treat certain diseases, some research suggests that they could improve overall health and reduce exposure to pesticides. For example, a review of 31 studies published in 2010 concluded that organically raised beef had significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally raised beef. A separate analysis of eleven studies published in 2012 led to similar conclusions.

According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. The Environmental Working Group also found that E.coli O157 has been associated with fewer human illnesses in children and adults since 2006, when USDA began requiring stricter organic standards for animal production.
